After Breast Surgery
- There's still a lot living to do!
We know you have questions, we all do. Here is some information to
make your new life a little easier.
You need not restrict your activities because you're wearing a breast form -- swimming, dancing and other sports can be enjoyed just as they were before your surgery. Breast forms have come a long way; you have a choice of shapes, sizes and colors to match your needs. Thanks to new technology, they're softer and more pliable, just like your own body.
Proper fitting of both breast form and bras will provide you with a natural feel and look.
Each of us is unique, so it is important to be properly fitted for your breast form and bras by a certified consultant.
Even though your surgery was similar to that of a family member or friend, you have individual needs which should be addressed.
Balance is very important. Breast tissue is heavy; if one side of your body is supporting tissue and the other is not, an imbalance may occur and you may experience:
- One shoulder higher than the other (your body is trying to compensate for the imbalance)
- Neck, shoulder or back discomfort
- Balance problems
- Clothing doesn't look, feel or fit the was it used to
Weighted breast forms, or prostheses (prothesis is the singular form), are generally made of silicone which has been specially designed to provide balance with your remaining breast. Other forms for leisure, sleeping and swimming are available.
As soon as your doctor gives you permission to wear a weighted breast form, you may make an appointment for a personal, private fitting.
After you have made an appointment for your fitting, remember to bring the following:
* Your doctor's prescription
* Your Medicare card and any other insurance cards or information.
In many cases Medicare and private insurance companies will cover one silicone breast form for a unilateral mastectomy (two for a bilateral mastectomy) and two bras every two years. Regulations regarding replacement may vary, so check with your insurance agent before making any purchases.
When balance, support, and secure fit are missing, the body's graphics are compromised.
